The Fairylogue and Radio-Plays (1908)

L. Frank Baum's
THE FAIRYLOGUE AND RADIO-PLAYS

The Cast of the Fairylogue and Radio-Plays

THE FAIRYLOGUE AND RADIO-PLAYS was an inventive production created by L. Frank Baum.  The productuon utilized live action, slides, and film.  L. Frank Baum, himself, hosted the presentation as if he were giving a lecture.  He would interact with the characters both on stage and on film.  At points through the presentation, Baum would "step" into the film pull the characters "out" of the screen and onto the stage.
The presentation used elements from The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, The Marvelous Land of Oz, Ozma of Oz, and John Dough and the Cherub, one of Baum's non-Oz novels.  During intermission, slides previewed Baum's latest Oz book, Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz.  The film clips were some of the earliest to appear in color.  They were filmed in black and white and later hand-colored.  The presentation also featured an original score by Nathaniel D. Mann, who had previously written several songs for Baum's stage production of The Wizard of Oz.
The production was received well; however, because of a very high production cost, ticket sales could not produce a profit.  The production lost money and closed early after playing its full run in Grand Rapids, Michigan and only part of its New York run.  It is very likely that the production would have toured the country had financial issues not arisen.
